Google Vertex AI is the machine learning platform inside Google Cloud, with Gemini, Imagen and Veo, Model Garden, tuning and MLOps for companies building on Google's infrastructure. Picasso IA is a studio, an API and an MCP server over 488 ready models, with free credits to start and no cloud project to set up.
Google Vertex AI and Picasso IA both let you generate images, video and more with AI models, and both offer an API, which is where the resemblance ends. Vertex AI is the machine learning platform inside Google Cloud: a place for engineering teams to reach Gemini, Imagen and Veo, browse Model Garden, tune models on their own data, deploy them and run the whole lifecycle with the access controls and governance a large company expects. Picasso IA is a creative studio with an API next to it: 488 models that are ready the moment you sign up, a toolkit where you pick one, effects you apply in a click, an agent that plans a job for you, and the same catalog reachable by one API for all models and an MCP server.
If your company already runs on Google Cloud and you are building a production product, tuning models on private data or answering to a security review, Vertex AI is built for that, and Picasso IA does not try to be that. If you want results today from many models by many labs, in a browser or from a request, with no cloud project, no permissions to configure and no billing account to wire up first, Picasso IA is built for that.
This is a choice between two kinds of tool, not between a good product and a bad one. One is infrastructure for people who build AI systems; the other is a finished place for people who make things with AI. The sections below cover what each side gives free, what paying changes, how each one generates, what each covers, and who should pick which. Where Vertex AI is the better tool, this page says so at length.
Eleven rows, the first seven answered with a yes or a no, the last four needing a phrase instead of a mark because a tick cannot describe them honestly.

Picasso IA leads on 1 row, Google Vertex AI leads on 3, and the other 7 come down to what you need.
Read that tally as a starting point, not a verdict. The three rows Vertex AI wins are not small ones: tuning a model on your own data, deploying a model you built, and living inside your own cloud project with its permissions are things Picasso IA does not offer at all, and if any of them is central to your work, no breadth of catalog on our side changes that. What the table cannot show is how the three ties feel in practice, and the next sections cover that.
A new Picasso IA account starts with free credits that spend on the same 488 models everyone else uses, not a demo tier: you can run an image model, a video model or a text-to-speech voice before deciding anything. The interface is in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic and Hindi, and you can browse the effects gallery without paying, which shows you what the catalog produces rather than what a page claims it produces.
Google Cloud has offered trial credit to new customers, and some of its services have a free usage allowance. Exactly what applies to Vertex AI, for how long and to which models is Google's to publish and it changes, so check Google Cloud's own pages for the current terms. Either way, trying Vertex AI starts with a Google Cloud account, a project and a billing setup, which is a real step before the first request.
The honest split: if you want to generate something today with zero setup and see the cost of each run before you commit, Picasso IA is where that happens from the first minute. If you are an engineer who will need a cloud project anyway, because the real product will live on Google Cloud, then starting there costs you nothing you would not spend later.
On Picasso IA, paying buys credits, and credits are the entire economy: every generation shows its cost before you run it, heavier jobs such as video cost more than a still image, and plans differ only in how many credits you get. The current numbers live on the pricing page; we keep them there rather than in articles, because plans change and a stale number helps nobody.
On Vertex AI, you pay through your Google Cloud billing account for the services you use, and the cost depends on the model, the kind of work and how much of it you run. That is the normal shape of cloud infrastructure, and for a company it is a feature: one invoice, budgets and alerts, and spending that sits next to the rest of the Google Cloud bill. How each model is priced is Google's to publish and to change.
The practical way to decide is to be honest about who is paying and why. A person or a small team who wants finished images, clips and voices, and wants to see the credit cost before pressing generate, maps cleanly to Picasso IA. A company that wants AI spend inside its existing cloud contract, with budgets and cost reporting by project, maps to Vertex AI instead.
This is where the two products stop resembling each other, and where Vertex AI is genuinely, specifically better at several things, so it earns the longest section on this page.
Vertex AI is a platform, not a gallery. You work inside a Google Cloud project, choose a model from Google's own families, Gemini for language and multimodal work, Imagen for images and Veo for video, or from Model Garden, which also holds partner and open models, and you call it from code or try it in the console. The part that has no equivalent on Picasso IA comes after that. You can tune a model on your own data, evaluate it, deploy it to an endpoint you control, wire it into pipelines, monitor it in production and keep all of it behind the identity and permission system your company already uses. For a team shipping a real product on top of a model, that lifecycle is the job, and Vertex AI is built around it.
The second advantage is first-party depth. Vertex AI is where Google exposes its own models along with the options and controls around them, so a team that has decided on Gemini, Imagen or Veo gets the platform that those models were built to run on, with Google Cloud services such as storage and data warehouses a call away. Teams already invested in that ecosystem get integration that a separate studio cannot offer.
Picasso IA makes the opposite bet. Nobody configures anything: you pick from 488 models we select and maintain, each with its own page where you can use it directly, or open the toolkit, pick a model, write a prompt or attach files, and generate. The catalog is wide on purpose: FLUX 2 Pro and Seedream 5 Pro for stills, Imagen 4 and nano banana for images, Veo 3.1 and Kling v3 for video, and many more, so the question is which model suits the job instead of which cloud product to provision. Effects add presets you apply in one click, and the creative agent called Supercomputer takes a result described in plain words, plans the job, picks models, renders the steps and shows you the outcome, which you then steer in the same chat. It is a separate product from the toolkit, for when you would rather describe than choose.
Nothing here is a custom model. Nobody uploads a model to our catalog, and we do not tune one on your data. If your project depends on a model that has seen your private images, your product catalog or your house style, that is a Vertex AI job, plainly.
Vertex AI is a platform that exposes models, so its coverage is whatever its models and its Model Garden expose, and that changes as Google ships. It reaches images through Imagen, video through Veo and language and multimodal work through Gemini, and Model Garden adds models from partners and the open community. Its focus is building on models rather than offering a page for each creative format, so you typically assemble the workflow yourself, in code or in the console.
Picasso IA covers formats as products. The catalog spans text to image, text to video, 3D models, remove backgrounds, large language models, upscale images, text to speech, lipsync, video editing, music, enhance videos and speech to text: twelve categories from many labs. A still image, a clip from that still, a voiceover, a lipsync pass, a music bed and a textured mesh from Hunyuan3D 3.1 can all happen under one account, from the browser, from an API request or from inside a chat client through the MCP server.
For developers the overlap is the interesting part. Both sell programmatic access, and the difference is what sits on the other side of the request. Vertex AI gives you your own project, your own quotas and your own governance. Picasso IA gives you a key from your account, a request that names a model and its inputs, and the generated file back, drawn from the same catalog and the same credits as the toolkit. Our image generation API page shows the shape of it.
Vertex AI exposes editing through its models, and what is possible depends on the model: image models can accept an image and an instruction, and there are Model Garden entries for related tasks. Its focus is building with models rather than a toolbox of one-click editors, so a task like removing the background from a thousand product photos is usually something you assemble, with a model, a script and your own storage, and then you own the result and its quality control. Check Google Cloud's own pages for the current editing options.
Picasso IA treats editing as dedicated tools that accept any image, generated on our platform or not. The catalog holds background removers, image upscalers, video enhancers and editing models such as nano banana, which can change one thing in an image and leave the rest untouched. You use them from the toolkit or from the API, and every edit shows its credit cost before you run it, so testing an upscaler on a real client file is a cheap experiment rather than a project.
The practical split: for a team that wants editing built into its own pipeline and tuned on its own images, Vertex AI gives it the raw parts and the control. For someone who wants a clean cutout or a sharper photo in the next five minutes, Picasso IA gives them the button.
Speed on Picasso IA is straightforward: fast image models return quickly, frontier models take longer, video takes the longest because video is expensive to compute anywhere, and the credit cost tracks that before you commit. Picasso IA also limits how many generations one account runs at once, which keeps the queue fair and stops a runaway script from draining your own credits.
On Vertex AI, performance and limits depend on the model, the region and the quota assigned to your project, and for a company this is one of its strengths: you can plan capacity, request higher limits through Google Cloud and design for scale in a way a consumer-style studio does not aim to match. The current limits are Google's to publish, so read them in Google Cloud's documentation before you design around a number.
Licensing differs. Picasso IA's model licenses come from the underlying providers and can differ between models, so check the page of the specific model your business depends on. What you may do with output from Vertex AI is governed by Google Cloud's terms and the terms of the model you use, which are theirs to publish and to change. On both, no license removes the external risk that a generated image can resemble a trademark, a real person or a distinctive artist's style, so review anything commercial before it ships. If an enterprise contract matters to you, that conversation belongs with Google Cloud; for questions about ours, our support team is the place.
Eight honest reasons, four per side, compressing everything above. If your real question is about one Google model rather than a platform, the nano banana comparison or the Google Veo comparison may match your decision better than this page does.
Choose Picasso IA instead when you want ready models from many labs without provisioning anything, a studio and effects next to the API, an agent that plans a job from a plain description, or the same catalog reachable from a request or from an MCP client in one account with the cost visible up front.
Most people who use both do it for different jobs rather than replacing one with the other, so treat this as adding a tool, not abandoning one. Leave your Google Cloud project, tuned models and pipelines exactly as they are while you test; nothing about trying Picasso IA requires giving that up.
For creative work with ready models, a studio and a simple API, yes, and for building and running your own machine learning on Google Cloud, no. If you want results from many models without a cloud project, Picasso IA is a genuinely strong option. If your work depends on tuning, custom deployment, MLOps or enterprise governance inside Google Cloud, Vertex AI is built for that and we are not.
Yes. On Picasso IA you create a key in your account, send a request that names a model and its inputs, and get the generated file back, using the same models and the same credits as the toolkit. Vertex AI offers its own API inside a Google Cloud project, with the project, permissions and quotas that come with it. The difference is mostly what you set up before the first request.
No. Picasso IA does not train models on your data and nobody uploads a model to the catalog; you choose from the 488 models we select and maintain. If your project needs a model that learns from your own images or documents, or one you deploy yourself behind your own controls, that is exactly what Vertex AI offers, and it is one of its clearest advantages.
No. You sign up, get free credits and start generating in the toolkit, with no project, no permissions and no billing account to configure first. Vertex AI runs inside a Google Cloud project, which is the whole point for a company that wants its AI work governed next to the rest of its cloud, and an extra step for someone who only wants an image.
The catalog includes models by those names, for example Imagen 4, Veo 3.1 and Gemini 3 Pro, each with its own page where you can use it with credits, next to models from many other labs. What you do not get is the Google Cloud project, the tuning and the governance around them. Which versions are available in each product can differ, so check the model page against what you need.
Yes. MCP-capable clients such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor can use the Picasso IA MCP server to generate images, video and voice from the catalog inside the conversation. That sits alongside the API and the studio, all drawing on the same models and credits, so a result made in a chat can be reproduced from a request later.
We deliberately avoid printing numbers for either product in an article, because prices and plans change and a stale figure misleads more than an absent one. Picasso IA sells credits, every generation shows its cost up front, and the current numbers are on the pricing page. Vertex AI is billed through Google Cloud and published by Google, and it changes independently of anything we control.
Check before you build a business on it, on either platform. On Picasso IA, licensing comes from each model's provider and can differ between models, so read the page of the model you use along with the platform rules. For Vertex AI, read Google Cloud's terms and the terms of the specific model. On both, review outputs for resemblance to trademarks, real people or distinctive artist styles.
No. There is no partnership, no affiliate arrangement and no payment in either direction between Picasso IA and Google Vertex AI, or any product named on these pages. The name appears here because people weighing a cloud AI platform against a creative studio search for exactly this comparison, and the most useful answer we can give is an honest one rather than a sales pitch dressed as a comparison.
Genuinely, yes, and this page has tried to say so throughout. It gives companies Google's own models, Model Garden, tuning, MLOps and the governance a security team asks for, all inside the cloud they already run on, which is hard to match with anything that is not a cloud platform. Competing with it honestly means admitting that for production ML on Google Cloud it does its job very well, and a creative studio was never trying to replace it.
Both are worth knowing, and the cheapest way to find out which one fits a job is to try it on something real. Open the toolkit with a prompt you already trust, spend the free credits, and let the result decide.
