Cohere is an enterprise AI company built around language: Command models for text, Embed and Rerank for search and retrieval, and private deployment for organizations that need it. Picasso IA is a creative studio of 488 models for images, video, music, voice and 3D, in a toolkit and through an API and an MCP server, with free credits to start.
Picasso IA and Cohere both have an API and both sell access to AI models, and that is roughly where the overlap ends. Cohere is an enterprise AI company arranged around language: its Command models write and reason over text, its Embed and Rerank models power search and retrieval, and the whole product is shaped for organizations that want to build search, retrieval-augmented generation and text workflows over their own data, including inside their own private infrastructure. Picasso IA is a creative studio: 488 models across twelve categories, from text to image and text to video to 3D models, music, voice and upscaling, in a toolkit anyone can open in a browser, plus an API and an MCP server that hand developers the same catalog.
If your project is an internal search engine, a document question-answering system, a multilingual support assistant or any pipeline where text goes in and ranked, grounded text comes out, Cohere was built for that job and nothing in our catalog replaces it. If your project needs images, video, voice, music or 3D assets, whether you click a few buttons in the toolkit or call the image generation API from your own code, Picasso IA is built for that, and Cohere does not make those things at all.
Neither is the lesser product. One is a language and retrieval platform for engineering teams, the other is a generation studio that also speaks API. The sections below cover what each side gives free, what paying changes, how each one generates, what each covers, and who should pick which. Where Cohere is stronger, and for retrieval and enterprise deployment it plainly is, this page says so at length.
Eleven rows, the first seven answered with a yes or a no, the last four with a short phrase, because a tick cannot describe them honestly.
| Feature | Picasso IA | Cohere |
|---|---|---|
| Text-to-image generation | Yes | No |
| Text-to-video and image-to-video generation | Yes | No |
| 3D model generation from an image | Yes | No |
| Embedding and rerank models for search | No | Yes |
| Private deployment inside your own infrastructure | No | Yes |
| Language models for text generation | Yes | Yes |
| Developer API with your own key | Yes | Yes |
| Model catalog | 488 creative models, many labs | Its own language and retrieval models |
| Main output | Images, video, voice, music, 3D | Text, embeddings, ranked results |
| How you start | Browser toolkit, then API | Developer account and API |
| Best-fit buyer | Creators, marketers, builders | Enterprise teams building search |
The tally: Picasso IA leads on 3 rows, Cohere leads on 2, and the other 6 come down to what you need.
Read that tally as a starting point, not a verdict. The two rows Cohere wins are not small: retrieval models and private deployment are the reasons many companies pick an enterprise language vendor in the first place, and nothing on our side offers either. What a table cannot show is how different the output is. The three rows we win are the whole creative side of AI, and Cohere does not enter it.
A new Picasso IA account starts with free credits that spend on the same 488 models everyone else uses, not on a cut-down demo: run an image model, a video model or a text-to-speech voice before you decide anything. The interface comes in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic and Hindi, and you can browse the community collection and the effects gallery without paying, which shows what the catalog produces instead of what a page claims it produces.
Cohere offers developers a way to try its models from an account of their own before any commercial arrangement exists. How far that trial goes, how heavily you can use it and whether it may carry real production traffic are Cohere's terms to publish and they change over time, so read them on Cohere's own site instead of trusting a summary here.
The honest split: if you want to see a generated image or video within the first minute, with no code and no pipeline, Picasso IA is where that happens. If you want to test whether a retrieval model improves the search results over your own documents, that experiment belongs on Cohere's side, because we have nothing to test it with.
On Picasso IA, paying buys credits, and credits are the whole economy: every generation shows its cost before you run it, heavier jobs such as video cost more than a still image, and the same credits cover the toolkit, the API and the MCP server. Current numbers live on the pricing page, not in articles, because plans change and a stale number helps nobody.
On Cohere, paying moves a developer from experimenting to running real workloads, and for larger organizations it typically opens the conversation about private deployment and a contract shaped around their own needs. The specific tiers and what each one includes are Cohere's to publish, so we do not restate them here.
The practical way to decide is to ask what recurs in your work. A steady stream of generated images, clips, voices and 3D assets, paid per generation with the cost visible first, maps onto Picasso IA's credits. A text and search workload that has to run reliably inside a company's own security perimeter maps onto what an enterprise language vendor sells, and the two budgets are rarely substitutes for each other.
This is where the two products stop resembling each other, so it earns the longest section, and it is where Cohere's real strengths deserve room instead of a passing nod.
Picasso IA does not ask you to build anything. You open a model's page, or the toolkit, pick a model, write a prompt or attach files, and generate. FLUX 2 Pro for photographic realism, Seedream 5 Pro for illustration, nano banana for edits that keep the rest of the picture intact, Kling v3 and Veo 3.1 for video, hundreds more, each with its credit cost visible. Developers get the same thing without the interface: you create a key in your account, send a request naming a model and its inputs, and get the generated file back, with one API for all models and the same credits. MCP-capable clients such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor can generate images, video and voice from the catalog inside the conversation through the MCP server. And Supercomputer is an agent in a chat: you describe the result you want in plain words, it plans the job, picks models, renders the steps and shows you the result, and you steer it in the same conversation. It is a separate product from the toolkit, where you pick the model yourself, and the creative agent page explains the difference.
Cohere makes a different bet, and it is a serious one. Its product is a set of model families for text work that you wire into your own application: Command models generate and reason over text, Embed models turn text into vectors so a system can find what is relevant, and Rerank models reorder search results so the most relevant passages rise to the top. Together they are the building blocks of enterprise search and retrieval-augmented generation, where an answer has to be grounded in a company's own documents rather than in whatever a model remembers. Cohere also puts weight on multilingual work, which matters when a company's documents and customers do not all speak one language. None of that exists on our side. Picasso IA has no embedding or rerank models, no way to index your documents, and no model-training or private-hosting layer, and a team that needs those things should not try to approximate them here.
The deployment story is the other place Cohere is ahead, and it is not a small one. Cohere is built so that an enterprise can use its models in the cloud through an API or privately inside its own infrastructure, which is what regulated industries and security-conscious companies often require before they will send a single document anywhere. Picasso IA is a hosted studio and API. You cannot take it inside your own data center, and an API-first platform designed for engineering teams will generally beat a studio on custom setups, scale planning and enterprise controls.
Where the two philosophies truly diverge is the unit of work. At its core, Cohere hands you components and expects an engineering team to assemble a system. Picasso IA hands you finished results and expects you to bring an idea. The catalog does include large language models and speech to text among its twelve categories, so a text step can sit inside a creative workflow, but that is a convenience around the media work, not a retrieval stack.
For still images, Picasso IA offers a wide range of text-to-image models, from FLUX 2 Pro and Seedream 5 Pro to Imagen 4 and Recraft V4 Pro, each chosen because it is good at something specific. Cohere does not offer image generation. If you hoped one vendor could cover both your text pipeline and your artwork, you will need a second tool for the artwork, and that is the gap Picasso IA fills.
For video, Picasso IA offers dedicated text-to-video and image-to-video engines including Kling v3 and Veo 3.1, so a still can become the first frame of a shot. Cohere has no video generation. Its product stays with language and retrieval.
For audio, the picture is lopsided in a different way. Picasso IA's catalog has text-to-speech voices for narration, music generation models, and speech to text for transcribing recordings. Cohere's audio side points the other direction: it is about turning speech into text so that it can be searched and analyzed, not about producing voices or songs. If you want to narrate a video, the text-to-speech API route is on our side. If you want to make recorded calls searchable inside an enterprise system, that belongs on Cohere's.
For 3D, the two do not overlap. Picasso IA's image-to-3D through Hunyuan3D 3.1 turns a picture into a textured, exportable mesh. Cohere has no 3D generation.
Text is the one area where both are present, and it deserves a straight statement: for open-ended writing or a chat step inside a creative workflow, the language models in our catalog are enough. For text that has to be searched, ranked, grounded in documents and deployed under enterprise rules, Cohere is the product built for it.
Picasso IA treats editing as a set of dedicated tools that accept any image, whether it was generated on our platform or not. Upload a product photo and remove its background, which developers can also do through the background removal API, upscale a low-resolution image, or hand nano banana an instruction such as changing the color of a jacket without touching the face. Every tool shows its credit cost before you run it, so trying an upscaler on a real client file is a cheap experiment.
Cohere has no image editing, upscaling or background removal. Some of its models can read images, for example to answer questions about a document, but it does not retouch or produce pictures. Its idea of editing is textual: summarizing a long document, rewriting a passage, translating between languages or extracting structure from text, all of it done through language models inside your own application. For a text-heavy workflow that is exactly right, and for a photo it is simply the wrong tool.
The practical split follows the material. If the thing in front of you is a picture, a clip or a voice recording that needs fixing, Picasso IA's tools do that directly in the browser or by API. If it is a pile of contracts, tickets or articles that needs summarizing, searching or classifying at scale, an enterprise language platform is the right place, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Speed on Picasso IA is easy to describe in kind: image models generally return sooner than video models, which take longer because video is expensive to compute anywhere, and the credit cost shown before each run tracks that difference. We do not quote timings in an article, because they move with the model you pick and the settings you choose.
Speed and limits on Cohere depend on the model, the way you access it and the arrangement you have with Cohere. A private deployment gives an organization more say over capacity and data location than any shared studio can, which is part of why enterprises choose it. Cohere's own documentation is the source for current limits and performance, and it is the right place to check them before you size a production system.
Licensing deserves the same care on both sides. On Picasso IA, check each model's licence and the platform rules before you build a business on its output, since terms can differ from model to model. On Cohere, read its terms for production use, including what applies to trial access compared with a commercial arrangement. On either platform, no licence removes the risk that a generated image or text resembles a trademark, a real person or someone else's work, so review outputs before you publish them.
Eight honest reasons, four per side, compressing everything above. If the rival you are really weighing is a general assistant rather than an enterprise language platform, the ChatGPT comparison fits that decision better.
Choose Picasso IA instead when your output is images, video, voice, music or 3D rather than text, when you want to open a browser and generate without building anything, when you want one catalog of 488 models behind a toolkit, an API and an MCP server, or when you want to start with free credits and see the cost of every generation before you run it.
Most teams that look at both end up using both for different jobs rather than replacing one with the other, so treat this as adding a tool, not abandoning one. Your Cohere pipeline can stay exactly as it is while you test what generation adds around it.
For creative generation there is nothing to replace, because Cohere does not make images, video, music, voice or 3D. For enterprise search, retrieval or private text deployment, no, and we would not claim otherwise. Picasso IA is a good fit when your output is media and you want a studio, an API and an MCP server over one catalog of 488 models. It is a poor fit when you need embeddings, rerank or a model running inside your own infrastructure.
No. The catalog covers creative generation across twelve categories, and there are no embedding or rerank models in it, no tool for indexing your documents and no retrieval pipeline. It does include large language models and speech to text, which are useful around a creative workflow, but they are not a substitute for a retrieval stack. If search over your own data is the job, Cohere is built for it.
Cohere is a language and retrieval company, and its products are about text, search, document processing and speech recognition rather than creative media. It does not generate images, video, music or 3D, so a team that needs those alongside its text pipeline pairs Cohere with a generation tool. Picasso IA covers that side, including by API and MCP server, and the two can sit next to each other.
No. Picasso IA is a hosted studio and API: you work in the toolkit, through the API or through the MCP server, and the generation happens on our platform. If your organization requires private deployment, with models running inside its own infrastructure, that is one of the clearest reasons to choose Cohere, and we would rather say so plainly than let you find out late.
Yes. You create a key in your account, send a request naming a model and its inputs, and get the generated file back, with the same models and the same credits as the toolkit. There is also an MCP server so clients such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor can generate from the catalog inside a conversation. The difference is what comes back: finished images, video and audio, not text or embeddings.
We deliberately print no numbers for either product in an article, because prices and allowances change and a stale figure misleads more than an absent one. New Picasso IA accounts get free credits, every generation shows its cost before you run it, and the current plans are on the pricing page. Cohere's terms and arrangements are published on its own site and change independently of anything we control.
Usually the licence of the specific model decides, and it can differ from one model to the next, so check the licence of the model you use and the platform rules before you build a business on its output. Review each result before publishing it, since a generated picture can resemble a trademark, a real person or someone else's work. If you are unsure about a particular case, ask support.
Yes, and for many teams that is the sensible setup. Cohere handles the text and retrieval side, such as search over documents or a multilingual assistant, while Picasso IA produces the images, clips, voices or 3D assets that content needs. Neither depends on the other, so you can start with a single job on one side and grow from there without rebuilding what already works.
No. There is no partnership, no affiliate arrangement and no payment in either direction between Picasso IA and Cohere, or any product named on these pages. Cohere appears here because people weighing a creative generation platform against an enterprise language vendor search for exactly this comparison, and the most useful answer we can give is an honest one, not a sales pitch dressed as a comparison.
Yes, genuinely. For a company that wants search, retrieval and text workflows over its own data, it offers language models, embedding and rerank models, multilingual strength and the option of private deployment, which is a combination that explains why enterprises choose it. Competing with it honestly means admitting that a retrieval-heavy project belongs on a platform built around language, while a creative project belongs in a studio built around generation.
Both products reward someone who arrives with a clear idea of the job, and the cheapest way to find out where Picasso IA fits is to try it on a real one. Open the toolkit, spend the free credits on an image or a clip your project needs, and keep Cohere wherever text and retrieval are the work.
