Vercel AI Gateway is a unified endpoint on the Vercel platform that routes an app's model calls through one place, with failover and usage tracking, built for developers working with the AI SDK. Picasso IA is a creative studio and API over 488 ready models, with an MCP server, effects and an agent, plus free credits to start.
Picasso IA and Vercel AI Gateway both put many models behind one door, and that is where the resemblance ends. Vercel AI Gateway is infrastructure for app builders: a unified endpoint on the Vercel platform that sits between your application and the model providers behind it. You call one place, and it takes care of routing, automatic failover when a provider has an outage, bring-your-own-key access, and a dashboard where you can watch usage and spend across everything your app calls. It is arranged around the AI SDK and around developers who ship on Vercel, and its own site describes language models first, with other kinds of models, images, video and speech among them, reachable through the same endpoint.
Picasso IA is arranged around the thing the model makes. It is a creative studio with 488 models spanning twelve categories, from text to image and text to video to 3D models, upscaling, background removal, music, text to speech and large language models. Every model has its own page, the toolkit runs all of them, and the same catalog is reachable by API and by an MCP server. So the question this page answers is not which door is bigger. It is whether you are building an application that must call models reliably, or whether you want finished images, video and voice, with or without writing code.
If you are a developer who needs a production app to keep answering when one provider has a bad hour, and you want one place to see every call, Vercel AI Gateway is built for exactly that, and Picasso IA is not a substitute for it. If you want the creative output itself, ready models with no setup, a studio for people who do not code, effects, an agent that plans a job for you, and an API when you do want code, that is Picasso IA. The sections below cover what each gives you free, what paying changes, how each one generates, what each covers, and who should pick which.
Eleven rows, the first seven answered with a yes or a no, the last four needing a phrase instead of a mark because a tick cannot describe them honestly.
| Feature | Picasso IA | Vercel AI Gateway |
|---|---|---|
| Image generation through an API | Yes | Yes |
| Video generation through an API | Yes | Yes |
| Automatic failover when a provider is down | No | Yes |
| Bring your own provider keys | No | Yes |
| No-code studio for making images and video | Yes | No |
| One-click preset effects | Yes | No |
| Chat agent that plans and renders a job | Yes | No |
| What it is built around | Creative output and a studio | Routing model calls for apps |
| Where you start | Pick a model, write a prompt | Point your app at one endpoint |
| Who it suits | Creators and builders alike | Teams shipping AI apps |
| What you get back | A finished image, video or voice | A routed model response |
Picasso IA leads on 3 rows, Vercel AI Gateway leads on 2, and the other 6 come down to what you need.
Read that scoreline as a warning against simple counting. The two rows Vercel AI Gateway wins are not minor: automatic failover between providers and bring-your-own-key access are exactly what a production application leans on, and Picasso IA does neither. Our three wins are about a different reader, the person who wants the result and not the plumbing. The two shared yes rows say something too: both can be reached by API for images and video, so a developer can compare them on a real request instead of on a feature list.
A new Picasso IA account starts with free credits that spend on the same 488 models everyone else uses, not on a demo tier. You can run an image model, a video model or a text to speech voice before deciding anything, in a browser, with nothing to install and no key to create. The interface is in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic and Hindi, and you can browse the community collection and the effects gallery without paying, which shows what the catalog produces instead of what a page claims it produces.
Vercel AI Gateway is a product of the Vercel platform, and whether it includes any free usage, and what credits or allowances apply, is Vercel's own information to publish and to change. We do not restate it here, because a figure copied into an article is wrong the next time it moves. Check Vercel's own pages for the current shape of it. What stays true is the kind of access: it is made for a developer who already has an app, or is about to build one, and who wants to point its model calls at a single endpoint.
The honest split: if you want to make something today with no code and see a result in the first minute, the free credits on Picasso IA are the quicker path. If you are already deploying an application on Vercel and the question is how its model calls should be routed and watched, the gateway is the thing to try inside your own project, which a studio cannot do for you.
On Picasso IA, paying buys credits, and credits are the whole economy. They are the same credits whether you generate in the toolkit, through the API or from an MCP client, every generation shows its cost before you run it, heavier jobs cost more, and plans differ in how many credits you get. Current numbers live on the pricing page. We keep them there and not in articles, because plans change and a stale number helps nobody.
On Vercel AI Gateway, what you pay depends on the models your app calls and on how you set up access, including whether you bring your own provider keys, and the details are in Vercel's own documentation and billing pages. We do not quote any of it. The structural difference is easy to state: with a router, you watch spend per model and per request in a dashboard built around an application; with Picasso IA, the spend is one balance of credits that covers every model in the catalog.
The practical way to decide is to be honest about who is paying and for what. A team with existing provider contracts, or one that wants those contracts to keep applying, will care about the bring-your-own-key route that Picasso IA does not have. Someone who wants one account, one balance and a finished file at the end of each request will find credits simpler. Both are reasonable, and they answer different questions.
This is the section where the two products stop resembling each other, so it is the longest, and where Vercel AI Gateway's strengths deserve real space.
Vercel AI Gateway does not make anything itself. It is a router: your application sends a request to one endpoint, and the gateway passes it to a model from one of the providers behind it, with a fallback path ready if that provider is down. That design is the point. Because it works with the AI SDK and with common client libraries by changing a base address, an existing app can adopt it without being rewritten, and a team can try a different model behind a feature with a small change. It also gives the people running the app a single view of what was called and how much it cost. For a production system that is a real engineering advantage, and a creative catalog does not try to offer it.
Picasso IA generates the other way around. You choose a model, write a prompt or attach files, and the result is the product. The catalog is selected and maintained for you: FLUX 2 Pro for photographic images, Seedream 5 Pro for illustration, nano banana for edits that keep the original image intact, Kling v3 and Veo 3.1 for video, and hundreds more, each with a visible credit cost. No account trains a model, nobody uploads a custom one, and there is nothing to deploy. For developers there is an API: you create a key in your account, send a request naming a model and its inputs, and get the generated file back, with the same models and credits as the toolkit. Our guides to one API for all models and to the image generation API show what that looks like in a project.
Here is the part worth reading twice. Picasso IA also has an API, so a developer could use it as the creative layer inside an app, and the guide to adding AI video to your app covers that case. What it does not give you is the routing layer. There is no automatic switch to another provider when one fails, no bring-your-own-key option, and no spend dashboard organized around an application's calls. You name a model in each request, and your own code decides what happens when a request errors. If reliability engineering across providers is the job, the gateway is the right tool and our API is the wrong one.
For still images, Picasso IA offers a wide range of vetted models you can use directly on their own pages or in the toolkit. Vercel AI Gateway, as its own site describes it, can route image generation among the things it supports, so a developer can reach an image model through the same endpoint as a language model. The difference is what surrounds the call: with us, there is a studio where you see the picture, adjust the prompt and keep a history; with a gateway, the picture arrives as a response inside your application, and showing it is your code's job.
For video, the same pattern holds. Picasso IA has text to video and image to video models, including Kling v3 and Veo 3.1, usable in the toolkit or by API, as described in our text to video API guide. Vercel AI Gateway lists video among the kinds of model it can route, and what is available through it depends on the providers behind it and on Vercel, so check its own documentation for the current list.
For audio, Picasso IA covers text to speech, music, lipsync and speech to text across its twelve categories, in the studio and through the same API. Vercel AI Gateway's own site mentions speech and transcription among what it routes. Neither is a recording studio: both give you generated audio, ours as a finished file you can listen to in the browser, theirs as a response for your application to handle.
For 3D, Picasso IA has image to 3D models such as Hunyuan 3D 3.1 that turn a picture into a mesh you can export. Nothing in Vercel AI Gateway's own description points to 3D generation, and its job is routing, so treat it as outside what it is for. Likewise, no gateway is the place for effects or an agent. That gap is the point: one is a router, the other is a place where creative work gets finished.
Picasso IA treats editing as a set of dedicated tools that accept any image, whether it was generated here or not. Upload a phone photo and remove its background, upscale a low resolution image with a model such as Crystal Upscaler, or hand nano banana an instruction like changing a shirt color without touching the face. Every editing tool shows its credit cost up front, the same as generation, so trying an upscaler on a real client file is a cheap experiment. For developers, the same tools can be called by API, as in the background removal API guide.
Vercel AI Gateway is not an editor. It does not present you with an image to retouch or a button that removes a background. If an editing model is reachable through the providers it routes to, a developer can call it from an app, but the interface, the preview and the follow-up edit are things the app has to build. That is not a flaw, it is what a router is: the editing experience belongs to whoever builds the product on top of it.
The practical split: if you have an image and want it better today, with no code, use Picasso IA. If you are building an app that edits images for its own users and you need dependable routing underneath, the gateway is part of the plumbing, and the editing tools are yours to design.
Speed on Picasso IA is straightforward: fast image models return in seconds, frontier models take longer, video takes minutes because video is expensive to compute anywhere, and the credit cost in front of you tracks that reality before you commit. Speed on Vercel AI Gateway depends on the model you call and on the provider behind it, with the gateway sitting in the path. Failover is designed to keep an application answering when a provider has an outage, which is a reliability gain, not a promise of speed. Exact limits, quotas and timings are Vercel's to publish, so read its documentation for what applies to your project, and do not trust a comparison page to know them.
Licensing deserves the same care on both. On Picasso IA, model licenses come from each model's provider and can differ between models, so check the model page for the one your work depends on, and the platform rules as well. On Vercel AI Gateway, what you may do with an output depends on the model you called and its provider's terms, plus Vercel's own terms. On both, no license removes the outside risk that a generated image or clip resembles a trademark, a real person or a distinctive style, so review anything commercial before it ships.
Eight honest reasons, four per side, compressing everything above. If your real alternative is a self-hosted pipeline instead of a managed router, the ComfyUI comparison may match your decision better than this page does.
Choose Picasso IA instead when you want finished images, video and voice from 488 ready models with no setup, a studio for people who do not code, one-click effects, an agent that plans the job in a chat, or an API and MCP server that return a file instead of a routed response.
Most people end up using both for different jobs rather than replacing one with the other, so treat this as adding a tool. Keep your gateway setup exactly as it is while you test; nothing about trying Picasso IA requires changing a line of an existing app.
For creative output, yes, and for routing model calls inside an application, no. If you want finished images, video and voice from ready models, with a studio for the no-code case and an API for the code case, Picasso IA is a strong fit. If what you need is failover across providers, bring-your-own-key access and a dashboard of every call your app makes, Vercel AI Gateway was built for that and we were not, and no catalog breadth makes up for it.
Not really. Picasso IA has an API where you name a model in each request and get the generated file back, and that works well as the creative layer of an app. It does not route a request across providers for you, it does not fail over to another model when one errors, and it does not take your own provider keys. Your code chooses the model, and your code decides what happens on an error.
Yes. You create a key in your account, send a request that names a model and its inputs, and get the generated file back. It is the same catalog and the same credits as the toolkit, so you can test a model by hand first and then call it from code. See one API for all models for how that fits into a project.
Its job is routing model calls for applications, and what it presents is an endpoint and a dashboard for the people who run an app, not a creative studio with presets, a gallery and an agent. A developer can build an interface on top of it, but that interface is the app's job. If you want to make images and video without writing anything, the toolkit and the effects on Picasso IA are made for that.
No. Picasso IA works on credits: one balance that covers every model in the catalog, whether you generate in the toolkit, through the API or from an MCP client. If your team needs to keep using existing provider accounts and keys, that is a point in favor of Vercel AI Gateway, which supports bringing your own keys, and a reason to keep it in your stack next to us.
Yes. MCP-capable clients such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor can generate images, video and voice from the catalog inside the conversation through the Picasso IA MCP server, as described in the MCP server guide. There is also Supercomputer, an agent in a chat that plans a job from a plain description, picks models and shows the result, covered in the guide to the creative agent.
We deliberately print no numbers for either product, because prices and allowances change and a stale figure misleads more than an absent one. Picasso IA runs on credits, every generation shows its cost before you run it, and new accounts get free credits to start; current plans are on the pricing page. What Vercel AI Gateway costs depends on the models your app calls and how you set up access, and it is published on Vercel's own site.
On Picasso IA, check each model's license and the platform rules before you build a business on an output, because licenses come from the model's provider and can differ between models. On Vercel AI Gateway, what you may do with an output follows the model you called and its provider's terms, together with Vercel's own. On both, review anything commercial for resemblance to trademarks, real people or distinctive styles before publishing. Questions go to support.
No. There is no partnership, no affiliate arrangement and no payment in either direction between Picasso IA and Vercel AI Gateway, or any other product named on these pages. Its name appears here because developers comparing a creative generation API against a model router search for exactly this comparison, and the most useful answer is an honest one.
Genuinely, yes. It solves a real problem for teams that ship AI features: one endpoint in place of a tangle of provider integrations, automatic failover when a provider has an outage, the option to bring your own keys, and a single place to watch usage and spend. Its fit with the AI SDK and the Vercel platform makes adoption light for apps already there. Competing with it honestly means admitting that an application whose job is dependable model routing is better served by a router than by a creative catalog.
Both products reward someone who arrives with a clear idea of the job, and the cheapest way to find out which fits is to try each on a real task. Open the toolkit with a prompt you already trust, spend the free credits, and if the results earn a place in your week, the pricing page is where the plans live.
